Caramel Apple Slices
After an outing involving an orchard and some apple cider, I was able to talk Evan into watching Hocus Pocus with me, and to sweeten the deal I wanted to make a seasonal snack. I love caramel apples, and I love bite-sized treats, and everything is more fun with toppings, so caramel apple slices seemed like just the trick!
I realize that this doesn't exactly qualify as a recipe, but I'm posting it anyway. Fall fun days are meant for fun treats, minimal time spent making them, and maximum time spent enjoying cheesy movies and cool breezes.
Caramel Apple Slices
Prep Time: 15 minutes
What you need:
Apples
Caramel squares
Toppings
Suggestions: marshmallows, chopped nuts, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, sprinkles, chopped pretzels, coconut flakes
Directions
Prepare a cookie sheet by covering it with wax paper, parchment paper, or a baking mat. This is where you'll put your dipped apple slices.
Cut your apples into slices, sized to your preference. If you won't be eating these right away, I recommend dunking the slices a lemon juice and water mixture to help prevent them from browning, but this is optional! Once your slices are ready, dry them with a paper towel – otherwise the caramel won't stick to them.
Prepare your toppings, and have them ready in small bowls.
Put your caramels in a small saucepan. Heat over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat when the caramel has melted. If the caramel begins to bubble, this is okay, just be sure you give it a quick stir to make sure the caramel on the bottom doesn't burn!
Once the caramel is off the heat, you can dip your apple slices – be sure they're dry before you dip them! You can either use your hands, or you can spear each slice with a fork or skewer. Dip each slice halfway (or a little more) into the caramel, and let the excess drip off. You can then either dip the slice into a topping to really cover it, or you can set it on the cookie sheet and sprinkle the toppings on instead.
I recommend making these when you're ready to eat them, since they're best fresh! I like the caramel to still be a little soft. If you want to let the caramel solidify, you can put them in the fridge for 20 minutes.
Happy Eating,
Natalie
